Both platforms run successful stores. The right one depends on how much you want to manage yourself, your payment options and what you need to integrate.

Shopify and WooCommerce are two of the most widely used ways to run an online store. Both can work very well. The difference is less about features and more about who looks after the platform, how much flexibility you need and which payment and logistics providers you must connect.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hosted commerce platform (software as a service) | Free, open-source plugin for WordPress |
| Hosting and security | Included and managed by Shopify | Your responsibility: you choose and maintain hosting |
| Running costs | Monthly plan, plus paid apps and theme | Hosting, premium extensions and maintenance time |
| Updates | Platform updates handled for you | WordPress, theme and plugin updates to test and apply |
| Customisation | Themes and apps; deeper changes via Shopify's APIs | Almost anything, with PHP and the WordPress ecosystem |
| Content and blogging | Good for store content | Very strong, as it runs on WordPress |
| Best fit | Brands that want to focus on selling | Teams that want control or already use WordPress |
Before comparing themes, check that the payment gateways and couriers you need are supported in your country. Shopify's own payment service isn't available everywhere, and when you use a third-party gateway Shopify may charge an additional transaction fee depending on your plan. WooCommerce supports a wide range of gateways through extensions, but quality and maintenance vary, so choose well-supported ones.
If most of your orders are cash on delivery, look at how each platform handles COD, order confirmation and courier booking. Automating confirmation on WhatsApp can matter more than the platform choice; see how WhatsApp order confirmation reduces failed COD orders.
Many WooCommerce problems come from maintenance rather than from WooCommerce itself: slow hosting, too many overlapping plugins, and updates that were skipped or applied without testing. If nobody on your team will own updates, backups and security, either budget for a maintenance plan or choose Shopify.
Both platforms offer APIs and webhooks, so ERPs, accounting tools, marketplaces and WhatsApp can be connected to either. Shopify's app ecosystem covers many common needs without development. WooCommerce gives you more freedom to build exactly what you need, at the cost of owning that code. If you sell on marketplaces too, plan for one source of truth for stock; see marketplace integrations.
Both platforms can run bilingual stores with right-to-left layouts for Arabic, but the quality depends on the theme and how translations are managed. Test checkout, emails and invoices in both languages, not just the home page. Our guide to bilingual Arabic–English websites covers what to check.
Write the answers down and share them with whoever builds the store. They are also the best brief for a Shopify or WooCommerce project.
Moving between platforms is common and manageable. Products, customers and order history can usually be migrated, and redirects protect your search rankings. The key is planning the URL mapping and testing before launch; see how to migrate a website without losing rankings.

Websites
A good Arabic site is more than flipped text. URLs, layout direction, typography, forms and search signals all need attention. Here's the checklist we use.
